web design

Web design is the building of a front-end user experience, creating a user facing environment that allows website visitors to navigate quickly to the content they are searching for.

While modern design trends and technologies are ever changing, the key focus of web design should always be on the end user experience.

It is no use to anybody to have a website with all the bells and whistles available but unable to display the core content in an easy to read and understand format.

With my designs I choose to stick to three core ideas: Content, structure and simplicity. This allows for me to design with a strong focus on giving the end user easy access to the actual core content of the website, rather than dazzling them with several hoops they have to jump through.

I design each website individually for the client, giving them a unique website that re-inforces their brand or style.

web development

Development of a website usually focuses on the core "behind the scenes" elements of creating a website. These elements mainly consist of actually putting the code in to place that defines and displays the design. With more functionality or interactivity on a website comes more code.

This code can be written in a million different ways on hundreds of different platforms. No matter how simple the interaction is the code has to be created.

I have experience coding for many systems with different functionalities, from a browser-based space game to a steakhouse menu. I am confident enough to code my own system if it is the best option available but I can just as easily integrate available packages if it suits the needs of the client.

The main usage of these "back-end" systems is to give clients the ability to administrate their own websites, updating the content on the website themselves without having to touch the code. These systems are called Content Management Systems (CMS).

I have created custom CMS suites for various customers if they have specific needs (example: updating the stock available in a reptile shop). I also have experience with using various CMS such as Wordpress that give clients far more flexibility in the content of their website.

The current buzz around the world of web design is "responsive design". This design technique eschews the traditional approach of designing web sites for specific sizes or devices. In place of specific designs you have a single design that can responsively change to fit the device it is being shown on.

Responsive design enables websites to maintain a style and a theme regardless of what device the user is checking the site on. For example if you resize your browser window on this page or view it on a smart phone or tablet you will notice it is fundamentally the same but fits snugly on the device without having to zoom or scroll around.

Some changes have to be made for the sake of user experience, such as the menu becoming a single touch sensitive bar and the elements re-arranging themselves vertically instead of horizontal.
